History

Ordernhart is a small village in Baden Wurttemberg and has a delightful web sight for those who read German.  It is now a part of a larger community area known as Berglen. http://www.berglen.de

In his early teens Carl left home to apprentice as a baker while living close to some relatives who could see to his well being.  At some point he and two other youths decided to emigrate to the USA.  Carl left the care of the relatives who thought he was going home but instead he traveled to Bremen where he was to join up with his friends but they didn't make the meeting as scheduled and Carl came to the US on his own.  His Mother thought he was still with the relatives and was shocked to find out he was in the US but was very supportive of the move.

The reference book GERMANS TO AMERICA shows that he was a passenger on the steam sailing ship RHINE which departed from Bremen and landed at Castle Garden in New York on July 10, 1884.

Few facts are known of the period between his arrival in NYC and his move to Peoria where he was Naturalized in 1889.  The cities of Philadelphia and New Orleans have come up in verbal history but no specifics are known to this writer.  One story about his travel to Philadelphia from NYC is that he bought a banana, a fruit he had never seen before, from a vendor on the train and tied to eat it whole until another passenger encouraged  him to peel it.
